The government in Scotland is encouraging people to get more vitamin D. They see higher levels of vitamin D as a way to reduce the amount of cancer, autoimmune diseases and rickets and are circulating information to the population in order to raise awareness about the importance of getting enough vitamin D and how to get it. Just by being out in sunlight the body is able to get vitamin D but when people spend so much time indoors combined with the shorter days in Scotland, there is a big tendency towards deficiency. Deficiency hinders the proper functioning of the immune system whereas severe deficiency can result in soft teeth and bones. Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish Health Secretary said, "Vitamin D is key to maintaining healthy bones. Young children have a high risk of deficiency and we are seeing an increase in reported cases of rickets in Scotland. These conditions are easily prevented by improving diet and taking a supplement if you are at risk. She further added that Recent research suggests that vitamin D deficiency may also contribute to a range of other medical conditions. The Scottish government are keen to continue to monitor this evidence." For light skinned people exposure to the sun for just 15 minutes a day is enough to get sufficient vitamin D for the day. Explaining the need for special attention on getting enough vitamin D Sturgeon said, "We know that in Scotland the winter sun is not strong enough to provide the minimum vitamin D needed for health -- especially for those with darker skin," adding that "A significant proportion of the U.K. population has low vitamin D levels. This leaflet aims to ensure that those at risk are aware of the implications of vitamin D deficiency and know what they can do to prevent it."
