Weight loss Formula Found

A huge study has been undertaken to answer the most pressing question for weight watchers. The answer they found was relatively simple; that people need to keep a check on their protein levels and GI index. The GI index is a measure of the levels of glycaemi in their diet. The practical application means that a diet in low fat foods such as beans and low fat dairy products and with little white rice, white bread and other foods high in refined starch is needed. The GI index relates to the speed that carbohydrates are converted into glucose. If the GI is low it means that the digestion of carbohydrates is slow and therefore satiety is achieved on less food. The special attraction of a low GI diet is that people can eat until they feel full without having to be calorie conscious and still not gain any weight. The study involved 800 children and 900 adults from 8 countries in the European Union including the UK. After having kept to the low GI diet for 6 months the average weight loss was 2 kg more than those on high GI diets achieved. The people on the study had all been involved in weight loss programmes before through which they had lost an average of 11kg, but wanted to find a diet that would enable them to keep the weight off. From the University of Copenhagen, study leader, Professor Arne Astrup said, "I was one of the enemies of GI," adding that "I expected in this trial it would make no difference. I was really surprised. It is as important as protein in maintaining weight loss."  It is already known that high protein diets help in weight loss as the raise insulin production and delay the emptying of the stomach. By adding low GI foods which are slowly digested the hunger levels decrease. As keeping the motivation going in any diet is very difficult, the low GI diet is effective because no particular food group is banned. The main foods to eat are wholegrain cereals and breads and most vegetables, along with fruits, except for melon and kiwis as they are converted to sugar very quickly. Strangely enough chocolate is in the low GI category as the fat contained in it slows the speed of the sugar absorption. Professor Astrup suggested: "If you choose wholegrain versions of bread, pasta and rice, then you will have a lower GI diet. These are the most important contributors."
