Doctors are hailing a new drug that can prevent premature ejaculation extending the length of sexual intercourse. At a recent meeting of the American Urological Association delegates heard how dapoxetine can lengthen the duration of intercourse by three to four times. In the US the drug approval agency the Food and Drug Administration is reviewing an application for dapoxetine, which was developed by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, an affiliate of Johnson and Johnson. It will still be some time before the drug is available in pharmacies.Dapoxetine is chemically similar to a family of antidepressants called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). These types of antidepressants are known to have an impact on ejaculation. Trials of dapoxetine have shown a trebling of the duration of intercourse. The beneficial effect occurred after the first dose and increased over the study period. Sex educationalist Seb Cox commenting on the research said "Premature ejaculation is a huge problem. All men suffer in varying degrees, and as men we are often very uncomfortable talking about sex, it's very much a hidden problem. I have been writing for years about the possibility that some anti depressant drugs seemed to have the effect of delaying ejaculation, just as this drug is doing. When Dapoxetine is available I think it will have an even bigger effect than viagra on how men have sex, and of course, just like viagra, few will admit to using it, and the manufacturers would never suggest using it for recreational effect.
